CARE

The Centre for Addiction Research and Education (CARE)

CARE is a national Division of DRUG ARM Australasia, and provides education, training, research, pevention, evaluation and information support to the organisation and the general public. CARE is also involved in community based prevention work, and capacity building in the organisation and our sector.

CARE encompasses DRUG ARM’s commitment to educating and informing the communities in which we live and operate. It’s all about information that is current, accurate and appropriate.

We offer support in the following areas:

Research
CARE oversees research by DRUG ARM into areas of treatment best practice, inter-agency collaboration and new community initiatives. Recent projects have examined Marginalised Youth, Volatile Substance Misuse and Schoolies’ Week on the Gold Coast.

Been to Schoolies in 2009? Tell us how it went for you...

Resource Centre
The Resource Centre includes a specialist public lending library with materials in a variety of formats, including professional journals, pamphlets and fact sheets, current research papers and books, videos and DVDs.

Volunteer Training
DRUG ARM delivers specialised courses that prepare participants to work effectively in the community as volunteers on our programs. These courses are skills based and include specialist units on Alcohol and Other Drugs.

Student Placements or Internships
We offer placement positions or internships to tertiary students at all levels. Fields of study include Human and Community Services, Nursing, Medicine, Psychology, Social Work, Library & Information Management and Criminology. Guidelines for student placements are available; these tell you how to get started and will help you work out what is best for your studies.

Community Education
CARE also provides specialised education and training on Alcohol and Other Drugs for community groups. This can take the form of resources, seminars, community forums or interactive workshops.

Professional Education/Corporate Training
CARE can provide tailored training sessions for professionals who work in allied fields, or for any organisation who requires up to date and accurate information around drug and alcohol issues.

School-based Education Programs
CARE provides tailored presentations and workshops for school students, teachers and parents on topics around alcohol and other drugs to complement the school curriculum.

Community Prevention Programs
CARE hosts prevention programs, assisting communities to address and minimise the harms of alcohol and drug use at a population level. Activities include involvement with Liquor Accords, local research and needs analyses, Tobacco Action Groups and Safer Venues Awards programs.

Capacity Building
CARE undertakes organisation-wide projects to improve our capacity to meet specific client needs or address new and emerging issues in our field. This work often flows over into the communities in which we work, sharing those improved skills and capacity with our colleagues.

Resources for Church Communities
Within the Resource Centre we have a specific Christian Recovery section. Additionally, we can assist with training of clergy and lay Church members in areas relating to alcohol and other drugs, can provide Sunday School lesson ideas and sermon outlines or help with Youth Groups and deputations.
